Zog here.. I left a post in the other forum concerning whether or not the tracker would work in the uk. I noticed that you want to get more modules into the field for testing. ican certainly help with that in the UK. My main interest is the tracking of parcels...typical times from post to delivery is 2 days and also i can get them tested on aircraft (737's) on internal uk flights. Would feedback on this sort of testing be useful to you?? either way pls let me know. If you reckon that it will work in the uk i will get building straight away :D

best regards

I tracked a parcel with it once. A user sent me a broken tracker. I fixed it and sent it back to him live, and was able to track it from mailbox to door. The parcel went by ground only.

Sure it will work in the UK, if you get a quad band or 900/1800 module. If you send me a module, I will port the code for you. I am writing build 18 right now.

I was going to buy the components from mouser as I cant seem to find the GPS module here in the uk. Would getting the GPS module from the US cause a compatibility problem? I can certainly send you the module for programming as my electronic knowledge is limited so will definately take you up on that offer. The phone i was thinking of using was the Nokia 2610......any known issues on this model?

I don't think buying a GPS module from the US will cause a compatibility problem -- The GPS satellites that orbit over the US are the same as the ones that orbit over the UK.

I got mine from Mouser. As of the time of this post, they have 108 of them ready to ship.

The GPS module is not a problem. The phone, or GSM module, is a problem.
As far as I know, the Nokia does not provide serial AT commands. Samsungs such as E317 should work with some code changes, which are being made in build 18. The Motorola T720/T730 should work, although the T720 does not seem to have new message notification. I am not sure what the best UK phone is. You don't have the C168i or anything equivalent, do you?

i have spoken to a uk supplier, RS components and they can get all the bits except the AVR and the tyco gps module and connecter. They do have others but I am unsure as to their compatibility. i have pasted the link below in case you want to have a look. Probably the best option at this stage is for me to get them from Mouser as you already know that they work. I have a c168 on order and that should be with me in about 10 days.

I will keep you posted.

Is your C168i unlocked?
The ones here are AT&T only.

it should be unlocked. I am having to get it from honk kong but it is for the european market and therefore should be unlocked. Should just be a case of popping in a uk operator sim. If by bad luck it is locked i will have to get it unlocked.

just had the quote through from RS components. they can get all bits in the uk apart from the GPS module and the connector. Two of the items have to come from RS USA and will incur a $10 shipping charge so it looks like i would be better off getting the whole lot from mouser. Especially with the $/£ exchange rate being so good.

there are GPS modules available in the uk but not from tyco. As it is my first build I will go with the mouser spec and explore the other modules later.

Will keep you posted

Zog,

Would it not be illegal to do this in the air?

1. Cellphone usage on the airplane?

2. Electronic device that is turned on, inside a box, on a plane, inside the cargo area......need I say more?
