i have been looking for inexpensive diy gps tracking alternatives since the beginning of time. this looks like the perfect site to tinker around in. i guess the question is do you have anything in the works that doesnt require a monthly fee.

anyway great site...

I guess any tracker would require a wireless network and unless you are willing to suffer from unreliable connections you will have to pay a monthly fee.

10$ a month is hardly anything. It's the cost of lunch.
Cheaper if you do the prepaid messaging option...

Another option is to work with a wireless development board and rely on it being able to connect to wi-fi every once in a while and report it's logs...

I worked with their TCP/IP development kit a few years ago and they are really easy to do great things with.
